Cherry Health Data Breach Investigation

Turke & Strauss LLP, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Cherry Street Services, Inc., which does business as Cherry Health, regarding its recent data breach. The Cherry Health data breach involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to over 184,000 individuals.

Cherry Health is an independent, non-profit Federally Qualified Health Center based in Michigan. Founded in 1988, Cherry Health focuses on removing barriers, expanding access, and delivering comprehensive quality health care services to underserved communities, regardless of an individual’s insurance status or ability to pay.3 Today, Cherry Health provides primary care, dental, vision, behavioral health, pharmacy services, and more.3 Headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Cherry Health operates in six counties across the state with a team of more than 800 health care professionals at 20 locations.3

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Cherry Health discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. Through its investigation, Cherry Health determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed this sensitive information on December 21, 2023. On February 15, 2024, Cherry Health began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted and on April 16, 2024, Cherry Health sent out additional notices to potentially affected individuals. The type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Contact information
  • Financial account information
  • Medical information (e.g., patient ID number, provider name, service date, diagnosis/treatment information, prescription information)
  • Health insurance information (e.g., health insurance ID number)
