Founded in 1991, BPS uses its extensive experience in public accounting and with the IRS to serve a wide range of corporations, privately held companies, health care providers, emerging or start-up firms, nonprofits, and successful individuals.2 Today, BPS provides an array of services, including tax planning and compliance, audit and assurance, business consulting and start-ups, employee benefit plans, estate, gift, and trust planning, exit planning, wealth management, insolvency and bankruptcy, and more. Headquartered in Columbia, South Carolina, BPS employs approximately 100 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, BPS discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed. Through its investigation, BPS determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed this sensitive information through an employee’s email account on December 14, 2023. On April 15, 2024, BPS began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The exact type of personal information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by BPS. However, according to state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Driver’s license or state identification number
- Financial information (e.g., account number, credit or debit card number in combination with security code, access code, or password)
