Group Health Cooperative of South Central Wisconsin Data Breach Investigation

Turke & Strauss LLP, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Group Health Cooperative of South Central Wisconsin (“GHC-SCW”) regarding its recent data breach. The GHC-SCW data breach involved personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to over 530,000 individuals.

GHC-SCW is a not-for-profit managed health care organization based in Wisconsin. Founded in 1976, GHC-SCW provides the entire spectrum of health care services, including insurance, primary care and specialty care.3 The heart of GHC-SCW is in its nationally-ranked primary care clinics, which integrate with the insurance arm of the organization to provide quality care with value-added services.3 Today, GHC-SCW is also paired with several networks, which allow its members to access a variety of primary and specialty care options, depending on the insurance plan the member is enrolled in and the network he or she selects.3 Headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin, GHC-SCW has multiple clinics and pharmacies in Wisconsin and employs over 500 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, GHC-SCW discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. Through its investigation, GHC-SCW determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed this sensitive information on January 24, 2024. On February 9, 2024, GHC-SCW began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Contact information
  • Member number
  • Medicare and/or Medicaid number
