BEM Systems Data Breach Investigation

Founded in 1990, BEM Systems provides comprehensive environmental services to federal, state, and local government agencies and commercial clients.2 Today, BEM Systems integrates its expertise in science and engineering with proprietary data management and visualization software systems, which are developed in-house, to provide customized solutions for any environmental situation.2 Headquartered in Madison, New Jersey, BEM Systems has six additional locations across the United States and employs over 10 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, BEM Systems discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. Through its investigation, BEM Systems determined that an unauthorized party may have accessed this sensitive information between January 3 and January 7, 2024. On March 7, 2024, BEM Systems began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The exact type of personal information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by BEM Systems. However, according to state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license or state-issued identification number
  • Financial information (e.g., financial account number, credit or debit card number)
  • Medical information
  • Taxpayer ID number
  • Identity protection personal ID number
