NALS Apartment Homes Data Breach Investigation

Founded in 1984, NALS is engaged in the ownership, acquisition, marketing, management, rehabilitation, and disposition of multifamily apartment communities throughout the United States.2 Today, NALS owns and operates multifamily communities totaling over 15,000 apartment homes in markets such as Atlanta, Dallas, Phoenix, Denver, and Seattle.2 Headquartered in Santa Barbra, California, NALS employs over 200 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, NALS discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. Through its investigation, NALS determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed this sensitive information on or before December 2, 2023. As a result, NALS began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The exact type of personal information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by NALS. However, according to state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license or state-issued identification number
  • Financial information (e.g., financial account number, credit or debit card number)
  • Medical information
  • Taxpayer ID number
  • Identity protection personal ID number
