Matthews International Data Breach Investigation

Turke & Strauss LLP, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Matthews International Corporation (“Matthews International”) regarding a recent data breach involving its payroll processor. The Matthews International data breach involved sensitive personal identifiable information belonging to over 1,500 individuals.

Matthews International is a manufacturing and marketing company based in Pennsylvania. Founded in 1850, Matthews International is comprised of three business segments: Matthews Industrial Technologies, which designs, manufactures and distributes technologies and solutions for energy storage and industrial automation; Matthews Memorialization, which provides memorialization products to cemetery and funeral home customers; and SGK Brand Solutions, a provider of global packaging solutions and brand experiences. Headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Matthews International employs over 10,000 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On January 25, 2024, Matthews International was informed that its payroll processor, Paycor Inc., had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information relating to employees of Matthews International may have been acquired. Through its investigation, Paycor determined that one of its representatives shared a payroll report with a third party impersonating a Matthews International employee on January 9, 2024. On February 17, 2024, Matthews International began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Compensation details
  • Hire date 
  • Phone number
