Bay Area Heart Center Data Breach Investigation

Founded in 1982, Bay Area Heart Center’s physicians are thoroughly trained in all aspects of modern cardiology, including diagnostic and therapeutic areas such as cardiac catheterization, interventional cardiology, peripheral vascular, and pacemaker therapy.3 Additionally, Bay Area Heant Center’s cardiologists are certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine with subspecialty certifications in cardiovascular disease, interventional therapeutics, and electrophysiology.3 Headquartered in St. Petersburg, Florida, Bay Area Heart Center has 3 additional locations in St. Petersburg and Largo, Florida, and employs over 10 practitioners.  

WHAT HAPPENED?

On January 30, 2024, Bay Area Heart Center reported a data breach in which personal identifiable information and protected health information may have been accessed and acquired. According to a press release posted on the Bay Area Heart Center website, the breach resulted from a cybersecurity attack against its third-party business associate, Bowden Barlow Law, P.A. The type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Address
  • Dates of service
  • Claims data
  • Insurance policy number
