Founded in 1971, Lexington Medical Center anchors a health care network that includes five community medical centers and employs a staff of more than 8,000 health care professionals.2 The Lexington Medical Center network includes a cardiovascular program, an occupational health center, an Alzheimer’s care center, the largest skilled nursing facility in the Carolinas, and more than 70 physician practices.2 Additionally, Lexington Medical Center operates one of the busiest Emergency departments in South Carolina, treating nearly 100,000 patients each year.2

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Lexington Medical Center discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information may have been accessed. Through its investigation, Lexington Medical Center determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed this sensitive information through an employee’s email account and individual data drive on October 4, 2023. On February 12, 2024, Lexington Medical Center began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Medical information (e.g., medical record number, patient charge descriptor information) 
  • Health insurance information
