Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeons Data Breach Investigation

Turke & Strauss LLP, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeons, P.A. (“CTVS”) regarding its recent data breach. The CTVS data breach involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.

ABOUT CARDIOTHORACIC AND VASCULAR SURGEONS, P.A.:

CTVS is a physician group of cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons based in Central Texas. Founded in 1958, CTVS has achieved a record of medical “firsts” for Central Texas, including the first open heart surgery, the first coronary artery bypass graft surgery, the first kidney transplant, the first insertion of an intra-aortic balloon pump, and more.3 Today, CTVS continues this tradition of pioneering by offering a variety of services focused on the surgery of the heart, lungs, chest, esophagus, and major blood vessels of the body, including cardiac, thoracic, transplantation, and vascular surgical care.4 Headquartered in Austin, Texas, CTVS has two additional locations in Kyle and Georgetown, Texas and employs over 50 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On October 13, 2023, CTVS discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. Through its investigation, CTVS determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed and acquired this sensitive information between October 12 and October 13, 2023. Recently, CTVS began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license number
  • Date of birth
  • Financial information (e.g., credit card information, account number and password)
  • Medical information (e.g., medical record number, patient account number, doctor or medical professional name, treatment information, procedure code, diagnosis code, dates of treatment, prescription information, diagnosis and symptoms information)
  • Health insurance information (e.g., health insurance numbers, Medicaid/Medicare numbers, other health insurance information)
