Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center Data Breach Investigation

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed. Through its investigation, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center determined that a hacker group may have accessed the sensitive information belonging to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and UW Medicine patients on November 19, 2023. On December 7, 2023, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and UW Medicine began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. However, according to news reports, certain Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and UW Medicine patients have received emails from the purported cybercriminals, claiming to have patients’ sensitive personal information, including:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Address
  • Phone number
  • Medical history
  • Lab results
  • Insurance history
