Taylor University Data Breach Investigation

ABOUT TAYLOR UNIVERSITY:

Taylor University is a private, Christian liberal arts university located in Upland, Indiana. Founded in 1846, Taylor University offers over 90 undergraduate majors and minors and 6 graduate programs across a range of academic disciplines, including arts, sciences, business, education, health sciences, and more.2 Competing in the NAIA as the Trojans, Taylor University has 16 intercollegiate athletic teams and enrolls around 1,900 students.

WHAT HAPPENED?

In May 2023, Taylor University discovered that it had experienced a ransomware attack that impacted its systems. Through its investigation, Taylor University determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed sensitive personal information between February 26, 2023, and May 18, 2023. On December 4, 2023, Taylor University began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted by the breach. The exact type of personal information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by Taylor University. However, according to state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license number and/or state identification card number
  • Financial account information (e.g., account number, credit or debit card in combination with security code, password, or access code)
