Texas Medical Liability Trust Data Breach Investigation

In fact, Texas Medical Liability Trust is the largest medical liability insurance provider in Texas.3 Specifically, Texas Medical Liability Trust offers a variety of medical liability coverages, such as claims-made policies or occurrence policies, continuing medical education, risk management, and cyber consulting services. Founded in 1979 by the Texas Medical Association, Texas Medical Liability Trust is a self-insurance trust is overseen by a Board of Trustees made up of policyholders. Headquartered in Austin, Texas, Texas Medical Liability Trust has over 20,000 policyholders and employs over 50 people.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On October 12, 2022, Texas Medical Liability Trust discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. Through its investigation, Texas Medical Liability Trust determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed and acquired this sensitive information between October 2 and October 13, 2022. On September 11, 2023, Texas Medical Liability Trust began contacting individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license number
  • Financial account information
  • Medical information (e.g., treatment and diagnosis information)
  • Health insurance information
