McAlester Regional Health Center Data Breach Investigation

As a provider of medical care and treatment, McAlester Regional Health Center offers a wide range of services, including a level III trauma center, emergency care, pediatric care, neurology, orthopedic care, gynecology, and general surgery. Founded in 1978, McAlester Regional Health Center came to fruition after nearly 100 years of integrations with other hospitals and dates to back 1895 when Reverend Francis Key Brooke opened the first civilian hospital in the Indian Territory, then named All Saints Hospital.3 Originally a 25-bed hospital, today, McAlester Regional Health Center has grown to have a 171-bed capacity to serve the McAlester and surrounding Southeastern Oklahoma region. McAlester Regional Health Center employs approximately 720 individuals with hundreds of board certified physicians.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On May 8, 2023, McAlester Regional Health Center discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. Through its investigation, McAlester Regional Health Center determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed and acquired this sensitive information. On August 17, 2023, McAlester Regional Health Center began contacting individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Address
  • Driver’s license information
  • Financial account information
  • Health insurance information
  • Medical information (e.g., medical record number, treatment and diagnosis information)
