BNY Mellon Data Breach Investigation

Turke & Strauss LLP, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Bank of New York Mellon N.A., which does business as BNY Mellon, regarding its recent data breach. The BNY Mellon data breach involved sensitive personal identifiable information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.

As a large investment bank, BNY Mellon provides asset management, investment management, financial and liquidity analysis, and digital asset management. Today, BNY Mellon has grown into one of the largest banks in the United States with over $46 trillion in assets under custody or administration and nearly $2 trillion worth of assets being managed. Headquartered in New York City, New York, BNY Mellon has 51 locations across the United States and employs over 51,000 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On November 30, 2022, BNY Mellon learned that one of its vendors had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed. On March 23, 2023, BNY Mellon was granted access to conduct its own investigation to determine the amount and scope of the information involved. Through its investigation, BNY Mellon determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed this sensitive information on November 30, 2022. On May 11, 2023, BNY Mellon began contacting individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Account number
  • Address
