Independent Living Systems Data Breach Investigation

Turke & Strauss LLP, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Independent Living Systems, LLC, a business partner of its covered entity subsidiaries, Florida Community Care and Florida Complete Care, regarding its recent data breach. The Independent Living Systems data breach involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to over 4.2 million individuals.


Independent Living Systems is a third-party healthcare administrator that specializes in offering managed long-term care services and administration to a variety of healthcare providers. Founded in 2001, Independent Living Systems began by providing long-term support services to Florida healthcare systems, including care planning, assessments, and back-office support. Today, Independent Living Systems offers solutions beyond managed long-term care, such as meal delivery, nutritional support services, comprehensive care management, third-party administration, and more. Independent Living Systems currently serves over 4 million individuals through more than 30 clients. Headquartered in Miami, Florida, Independent Living Systems employs approximately 800 individuals in 10 offices throughout the United States. In 2022, it was reported that Independent Living Systems was on track to generate annual revenue of $1 billion.


On July 5, 2022, Independent Livings Systems discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health in its systems may have been accessed and obtained. Through its investigation, Independent Living Systems determined that an unauthorized actor accessed and acquired this sensitive information between June 30 and July 5, 2022. Independent Living Systems posted a preliminary online notice of its data breach on September 2, 2022. On March 14, 2023, Independent Living Systems began contacting individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license number
  • Address
  • Health insurance information
  • Medical information (e.g., medical record number, prescription information, food delivery information, diagnosis or treatment information)
