BayCare Clinic Data Breach Investigation

Turke & Strauss LLP, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating BayCare Clinic, LLP, regarding its recent data breach. The BayCare Clinic data breach involved protected health information belonging to approximately 134,000 individuals.

ABOUT BAYCARE CLINIC, LLP:

BayCare Clinic is a medical care provider serving northeastern Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Founded in 1999, BayCare Clinic has rapidly expanded since its founding to provide primary and specialty medical services. Accordingly, BayCare Clinic offers expertise in 20 different medical specialties, including cardiology, anesthesia, neurology, orthopedics, and more. Furthermore, BayCare Clinic employs over 100 advanced practice providers to diagnose and treat a range of medical conditions. Headquartered in Green Bay, Wisconsin, BayCare Clinic operates satellite clinics in 13 regional communities.

WHAT HAPPENED?

BayCare Clinic partners with Advocate Aurora Health to provide it with access to its electronic medical record system. On October 14, 2022, Advocate Aurora Health reported a data breach impacting approximately 3,000,000 people to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Offices of Civil Rights. The data breach involved the protected health information in Advocate Aurora Health’s electronic medical records. Advocate Aurora Health disclosed that an online information tracking pixel installed on its website collected and transmitted this protected health information to the third parties providing the pixel technology, including Meta (Facebook) and Google. Since BayCare Clinic partners with Advocate Aurora Health for use of its electronic medical records system, protected health information belonging to BayCare Clinic’s patients was also impacted and shared with third parties. On January 6, 2023, BayCare Clinic began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information impacted includes:

  • Name
  • Medical record number
  • Dates, times, and/or locations of scheduled appointments
  • Provider information
  • IP address
  • Type of appointment or procedure
  • Communications with individuals through MyChart
