Anthem MaineHealth Data Breach Investigation

Turke & Strauss LLP, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Anthem MaineHealth regarding its recent data breach. The Anthem MaineHealth data breach involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to more than 13,400 individuals.

Anthem MaineHealth is a health insurance company that offers Maine subscribers of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield access to Mainehealth services. MaineHealth is a not-for-profit health system. Founded in 1997, MaineHealth has grown to operate hospitals, medical clinics, behavioral health services, and diagnostic services across Maine and New Hampshire. Today, MaineHealth offers services beyond the immediate scope of medical care, including educational and clinical research opportunities, wellness classes, and a number of community events. Currently, MaineHealth serves over 1.1 million individuals, making it the largest healthcare provider in Maine.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield is a health insurance company that offers Maine residents access to MaineHealth providers. Blue Cross and Blue Shield was founded in Maine over 75 years ago. Headquartered in South Portland, Maine, Blue Cross and Blue Shield offers plans covering telemedicine, non-emergency, and emergency medical care.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, a vendor that Anthem MaineHealth does business with, Choice Health, discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems was accessed and acquired. Through its investigation, Choice Health determined that an unauthorized actor accessed and obtained this sensitive information on or around May 7, 2022. On August 5, 2022, Choice Health notified Anthem MaineHealth that breach included sensitive information belonging Anthem MaineHealth members. On September 30, 2022, Anthem MaineHealth began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Contact information (e.g., phone number or email address)
  • Medicare or Medicaid ID number
