Humana Data Breach Investigation

Turke & Strauss LLP, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Humana, Inc. regarding its recent data breach. The Humana data breach involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to more than 22,700 individuals.

ABOUT HUMANA, INC.:

Humana is a health insurance company that offers a large variety of medical and dental plans. Founded in 1961, Humana began as a nursing home company, eventually establishing itself as the largest nursing home business in the United States. By the 1970s, Humana was constructing and running hospitals across the country. With the reorganization of the American health care industry in the 1980s, Humana continued its upward trajectory of growth by entering into the health insurance sector. Today, Humana is the third largest health insurance provider in the United States, managing an annual revenue of more than $83 billion. Headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, Humana employs over 95,000 individuals and is a top 50 Fortune 500 company.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On May 18, 2022, a company that Humana contracts with to sell Medicare products, Choice Health, discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems was accessed and acquired. Through its investigation, Choice Health determined that an unauthorized actor accessed and obtained a database containing this sensitive information on or around May 7, 2022. Choice Health also determined that the unauthorized actor made the database containing this sensitive information accessible online. On August 5, 2022, Choice Health notified Humana that the database that was made available online included sensitive information belonging Humana members. On September 21, 2022, Humana began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information exposed includes:

  • Social Security number
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Health insurance information
  • Medicare beneficiary number
