Empress Ambulance Service Data Breach Investigation

Turke & Strauss LLP, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Empress Ambulance Service LLC, which does business as Empress EMS, regarding its recent breach. The Empress EMS data breach involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to over 315,000 individuals.

ABOUT EMPRESS AMBULANCE SERVICE LLC:

Empress EMS is a privately held ambulance company that provides emergency medical transportation services and quality after care transportation services in New York State. Based in the City of Yonkers, Empress EMS provides 9-1-1 emergency medical response services to Yonkers as well as additional mutual aid response services to neighboring areas. Additionally, Empress EMS provides emergency and non-emergency response services to districts, hospitals, correctional institutions, and private care facilities through Westchester County. Founded in 1985, Empress EMS employs over 500 highly trained employees who have responded to over one million emergency response calls.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On July 14, 2022, Empress EMS discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information of individuals in its system may have been accessed. Through an investigation, Empress EMS determined that an unauthorized actor gained access to its network on May 26, 2022, and acquired some files from certain systems on July 13, 2022. Empress EMS also disclosed that, during the breach, some of its systems were encrypted.  Recently, in September 2022, Empress EMS began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Dates of service
  • Health insurance information
