WMC is an acute care hospital in West Virginia. Founded in 1953, WMC offers a wide range of medical services, including obstetrics & gynecology, primary care, breast care, pediatrics & adolescence, cancer care, emergency services, robotic surgery, orthopedic & joint care, heart care, physical rehabilitation, and laboratory services. Additionally, WMC hosts an array of events open to the community, including health screenings, blood drives, first-aid/CPR classes, and fundraisers.3 Located in Weirton, West Virginia, MWC operates over 50 ancillary locations throughout the tri-state area and employs over 1,400 individuals.4

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, WMC discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. Through its investigation, WMC determined that an unauthorized party may have accessed this sensitive information between January 14 and January 18, 2024. On March 18, 2024, WMC began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Medical information
  • Health insurance information
  • Treatment information
  • Balance due on medical bill
