DPI Specialty Foods Data Breach Investigation

DPI Specialty Foods is a wholesale food distributor known for working with perishable and non-perishable food items. Founded in 1963, DPI Specialty Foods has established itself as the premier Western United States specialty food distributor by integrating sales, marketing, logistics, and schematics into its services portfolio. Today, DPI Specialty Foods products include appetizers, meats, seafood, cheeses, cut-and-wrap goods, and more. Headquartered in Ontario, California, DPI Specialty Foods employs more than 1,000 individuals throughout its three divisions.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On February 20, 2021, DPI Specialty Foods discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its system may have been accessed and obtained. DPI Specialty Foods disclosed that the breach was a malware attack that may have impacted the sensitive information of its current and former employees between January 22 and February 20, 2021. In February 2022, DPI Specialty Foods began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. Recently, on September 6, 2022, DPI Specialty Foods sent out additional breach notification letters indicating that more individuals likely needed notification that their sensitive information may have been impacted. The type of information exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license number
  • Address
  • Financial information (e.g., account number, credit or debit card number)
  • Passport number
  • Health insurance information
  • Employment records
  • Username or password information
  • Health records
